HSK Levels Explained: HSK 1-6 and HSK 7-9

Use this guide to understand what each HSK level measures, compare vocabulary benchmarks, and choose the right practice tests and word lists.

What are the HSK levels?

HSK levels describe a learner's ability to use Chinese as a second language. The official Chinese Testing Service currently lists six graded exams, HSK 1 through HSK 6, and one combined advanced exam that reports a result at HSK 7, HSK 8, or HSK 9.

HSK 1 is the beginner entry point. Difficulty then increases through broader vocabulary, longer listening and reading tasks, and writing requirements. The HSK 7-9 exam also includes translation and speaking.

Test rollouts can vary by date and test center, so confirm the version shown in your official registration notice.
