HSK stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, which means Chinese Proficiency Test in English. The three letters are the initials of the pinyin, not of the English words. That is why the abbreviation looks nothing like its translation.
Once you know what each part means, the name stops being a random string and starts making sense. It also explains why the exam is called one thing in Chinese and another in English.
The Three Parts of the Name

The test is administered from China. Its official portal is chinesetest.cn, where registration, test dates, and results live.
Test centres sit in many countries, so most learners can sit the exam without travelling to China.
What the Exam Is For
Most people take HSK for one of three reasons.
- To apply to a Chinese university. Many programmes ask for HSK 4 or above.
- To meet the language requirement of a scholarship.
- To show a language level to an employer.
Some learners take it purely to measure progress. That is a good reason too, and it is the one that keeps people studying.
How Many Levels There Are
The current standard has nine levels. HSK 1 to HSK 6 are separate papers. HSK 7-9 is a single paper that covers three levels at once.
The steps between levels are not even. Moving from HSK 1 to HSK 2 is short. Moving from HSK 5 to HSK 6 is long.
Two Things People Confuse With HSK
Mistake 1: Mixing up HSK and HSKK
HSKK is the separate oral test. HSK checks listening, reading and writing. If a page mentions a speaking section, check whether it is really describing HSKK.
Mistake 2: Thinking HSK is for native speakers
HSK measures Chinese as a second language. Native speakers take a different exam, the Putonghua Proficiency Test. The two are not interchangeable.
The Name in Everyday Use
In Chinese, people rarely spell out the letters. They say the full name, or shorten it to 汉考. Exam papers carry the same characters on the cover.
The Chinese name holds no level number. The level is added separately, so HSK（三级）means HSK Level 3.
