家人 (jiārén, family) is an HSK 1 word, and it appears on the Level 1 list only. It is one of the first family words a beginner meets, even though it looks like a compound of two separate words.
Learners often expect it to sit higher up. The reason it does not is worth understanding, because the same logic applies to hundreds of other words.
The Short Answer
- 家人 — jiārén — family, family members
- Level — HSK 1
- Built from — 家 (home, family) + 人 (person)
Both parts are HSK 1 words on their own. When they join, the result stays at Level 1.
Why It Looks Higher Than It Is
Two things make 家人 feel more advanced than it is.
- It is a compound, and compounds often feel like later material.
- Family vocabulary lists are usually taught in full, so the harder relatives arrive at the same time.
Neither changes the level. The official list decides, and 家人 sits on Level 1.
Family Words and Their Levels
This is where the surprise lives. Family vocabulary is split across several levels.
- HSK 1 — 家人, 爸爸, 妈妈, 哥哥, 姐姐, 弟弟, 妹妹, 儿子, 女儿
- HSK 2 — 爷爷, 奶奶
- HSK 4 — 家庭
So 家人 is HSK 1, but 家庭 (jiātíng, household) is HSK 4. They look almost identical and sit three levels apart.
How to Check Any Word
You can settle this question yourself in a minute.
- Open the vocabulary lists and search the word.
- Each level has its own downloadable list. The level of the file is the level of the word.
- If a word appears in more than one file, learn the lowest level it appears at.
Search the Characters, Not the Meaning
Searching an English meaning returns many words at many levels. Searching the two characters returns the one entry you want.
The Trap: Appearing in a Text Is Not the Same as Being on the List
A word can show up inside an HSK 5 reading passage without being an HSK 5 word. Passages use names, places, and set phrases that sit outside the level list.
So do not judge a word's level by where you met it. Check the list.
Two Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Assuming compounds are higher level
家人, 家人 and 汉语 are all HSK 1 despite having two characters. Length says nothing about difficulty.
Mistake 2: Studying family words as one block
爷爷 and 奶奶 are HSK 2, and 家庭 is HSK 4. Splitting them by level means you learn them at the right time instead of all at once.
What to Do Next
Take the family words you already know and check each one against the level lists. The gaps you find are your next study session.
Start from the HSK 1 hub if you are at the beginning, or browse the full vocabulary lists to check any word. For what the levels mean, see HSK exam levels explained.
Other Words That Surprise Learners
家人 is not the only word whose level looks wrong at first glance.
- 家庭 (jiātíng) — household — HSK 4, three levels above 家人.
- 爷爷 (yéye) and 奶奶 (nǎinai) — grandfather and grandmother — HSK 2.
- 爸爸 (bàba) and 妈妈 (māma) — father and mother — HSK 1.
The closest pairs can sit levels apart. Grandparents arrive a level after parents, and the general word for household arrives much later still.
Why the Level Lists Matter
A level list is a boundary. It tells you what you are expected to know, and it tells you when a topic is finished.
Without one, study has no end point. With one, you can tick items off and watch the list shrink. That matters more than it sounds on the weeks when nothing feels easier.
How to Practise
Write each family word on a card with its level in the corner. Sorting by level is faster than sorting by meaning.
